FRC’s Cultural Education Programme begins
The Cultural Education Programme organized by the Folk Research Centre for students who have just completed their Common Entrance Examinations began on Monday.
The Opening Ceremony was addressed by a number of dignitaries, including Ambassador June Soomer, Mrs. Maria Fowell of the Bank of St. Lucia and Mr. Hilary LaForce, Chairperson of the Board of the FRC. The Executive Director of the FRC, Dr. Kentry D. JnPierre gave the audience a summary of the background to the programme and informed those present of the details of this year’s activities. The Post Common Entrance Programme is supported by the National Community Foundation (NCF) and the Bank of St. Lucia (BOSL).
A moment of silence was observed to mark the passing of local master drummer Athanasius Laborde. Laborde was one of the cultural personalities scheduled to entertain the students.
The first school group to attend the 2010 event was the Lady Gordon Opportunity Centre from Ciceron. Mr. Frank Norville, St. Lucian folk singer and composer spoke to the students on Music and Culture. The Cultural personality of the morning’s session was Lady Leen the veteran calypsonian. She spoke with the students and performed some of her hits for them.
The Cultural Education classes continue until Friday July 9th. There will be lecture demonstrations on St. Lucian Music, Dance, Language, History and Fashion by various local experts. Among cultural personalities who will entertain the students are calypsonian Invader, gospel singer Shirley Ann Cyril, pop singers Shayne Ross and Sally Elwin, pianist Emerson Nurse, guitarist Boo Hinkson, drummer Niger Nestor and poet Kendel Hippolyte.
